Anime, the animated films and series, which in Germany have a dubious reputation. The widespread opinion is that anime is either for small children or for twisted people.

However, there are also anime that are suitable for a normal audience and even manage to present a story better than a real film adaptation. I would like to talk about one series in this article - Black Lagoon.

Black Lagoon is about an ordinary employee of a large Japanese company. He is kidnapped by pirates on a business trip and abandoned by his company. Disappointed by his company and without a goal, he is taken in by the pirate crew. From then on you experience with him and the crew the everyday life of the Black Lagoon crew in a fictitious pirate town. The Black Lagoon, a torpedo boat, is regularly hired by the Russian mafia for missions.

So much for the plot. But it's actually less about the assignments and more about society, people and life. This is highlighted in the series through the contrast of Rock, the former employee from everyday Japan, and the other crew members of the Black Lagoon. Revy in particular, a trigger-happy and violence-glorifying woman, is the exact opposite of Rock. It is between these two that the actual story develops. This is for me on the strength of the series.

When Rock and Revy search for treasure in an old Wehrmacht submarine and come across the corpses of the crew there, the contrast of the worlds of the two is shown here. While Revy barely notices the corpses except as a source of valuables, Rock is taken by the sight and he is barely able to move. Now, unfortunately, this doesn't sound as good as it actually is. The dialogues in this scene make this a masterpiece due to their philosophical and socio-critical tone.

Justice. I can't think of another word more loved by the people. It does have a nice ring to it. However, without ever exercising your own strength, you seek the death of others at the hands of someone else. Well, the justice you refer to smells pretty rotten to me.

Balalaika

I can recommend this series to everyone, even if you don't like anime. Currently you can watch the series on Netflix. Take your time and have a look if you don't know Black Lagoon yet. Also feel free to give me feedback on what you think of the series.
